A thick solenoid modelled with M'C

Problem statement

We wish to compute the central field of a thick solenoid with 1 m inner radius, 2 m outer radius and 1 m height. The current is 1 MAturn.

Modelling

M'C has a high level primitive, the loop that is used to generate and mesh the solenoid. A Loop is automatically divided in 8-nodes bricks. The number of bricks used for meshing is determined by the user.

Field plot

M'C generates combined color 3-D plots of the coil geometry and of the field map as shown above. Colors depends on the field intensity, stronger (red) inside the solenoid, weaker (blue) outside it.
[convergence curve]

Results

The magnetic field calculation is exact based on the meshed geometry, i.e. the only error is coming from the approximation of the curved geometry of the solenoid using 8-nodes bricks. This is the convergence curve for the central field.

The relative error on the central field decreases with the square of the number of elements - a quadratic convergence.

Accuracy of the order of tens of ppm and better is at hand !
