Inductance of a toroidal SMES

[torus]

Problem statement

We wish to know the stored magnetic energy of a toroidal magnet for Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) of medium size (4.5 m height, 3.5 m outer diameter) operated at 1.44 MAturn. We need therefore to calculate its inductance. Moreover we calculate the field on the xy plane of the torus.

Modelling

M'C uses two high level primitive, the segment and the arc to model a single coil. A model of the complete torus, as seen here, is conveniently obtained rotating the first coil generated around the vertical axis.

Results

M'C computes the inductance matrix for each coil in the system. Because of the symmetry we can limit the analysis to a single coil. The inductance and energy calculation of M'C has been benchmarked against other commercial software:

Code Computed energy (MJ)
M'C CryoSoft 73.5
Maxwell Ansoft 71
Opera Vector Fields 73.7

M'C has computed the energy in 160 CPU s on a PowerMacintosh 8500/120. Blinding speed that makes inductance calculation a routine Supermagnetwork !
