GANDALF
Overview
Stationary and non-stationary thermal and hydraulic analysis of
force-flow cooled conductors. Suited for the full spectrum of
evolutions, from cooldown of a coil to the stability analysis of the
conductor. A convenient virtual instrument interface gives to the
user a continuous monitor of the evolution.
Details
- A 1-D description of the CICC,
including the possibility of separate treatement
of a separate cooling passage (see e.g. the ITER conductors) with
independent flow and thermodynamic conditions.
- Modular conductor.
The user selects the components and materials forming
the cable (superconductor and stabilizer) and the jacket (structure and
insulation).
- Variations along the cable
length of conductor and helium channels properties. The user is free to
change arbitrarily the channel and cable cross sections, hydraulic impedance,
channel perforation and wetted perimeters along the cable length
(e.g. to model joints).
- Power-law dependence of the
longitudinal electric field in the superconductor and consistent
current sharing model, for the accurate description of operating conditions
around the current sharing regime (e.g. critical current measurements and
stability transients).
- The solver uses finite elements in space and finite differences in time.
Mesh adaptivity is used to cope with large gradients in the solution.
- An automatic check is performed in the integration on the amount of numerical
error introduced in the solution, a very usef tool to qualify solution.
- Extensive user's defined routines to allow easy-to-use interfacing to user's
specific applications.
- Graphic (Postscript) post-processor included in the package.
Examples
Some examples of results:
- a calculation of temperature profiles in
helium II
- the simulation of the QUELL experiment
